John Godfrey is Head of Unscripted at Australian public service broadcaster SBS, responsible for commissioned documentaries/factual, factual entertainment, entertainment and food. SBS is an Australian public broadcaster with a charter to explore cultural diversity, and a reputation of taking risks. Everything SBS commissions must explore some facet of cultural diversity.
SBS is best known for its commissioned documentaries/factual shows, which include Go Back To Where You Came From, First Contact, Struggle Street, Is Australia Racist?, Who Do You Think You Are?, Filthy Rich & Homeless, Australia In Colour and The Ghan. Factual entertainment shows include Child Genius, and Medicine or Myth?. Entertainment shows include Eurovision Song Contest, Eurovision: Australia Decides, Lesbian & Gay Mardi Gras, and Mastermind.
John was previously Head of Documentaries/Factual overseeing a documentary/factual strategy which delivered the most successful documentary/factual programmes in SBS’s history – Struggle Street was the highest rating commissioned series in SBS history, Go Back To Where You Came From won an International Emmy and Rose D’Or, and SBS won the Most Outstanding Factual Logie 4 times.
John previously worked for 10 years in UK and moved to Australia in 2002. In the UK he was Exec Producer/Series Producer for Rapido TV for 10 years (Eurotrash, Passengers, Unzipped with Graham Norton, etc) producing shows for Channel 4 and BBC. Previous to that he was a journalist – editor of i-D magazine, deputy editor of The Face, and contributory author to the seminal book about acid house/MDMA as a cultural catalyst, Altered State.
