Dermot Horan is Director of Acquisitions & Co-Productions at RTÉ, Ireland’s Public Service Broadcaster.
In his acquisitions role he has secured for RTÉ the likes of The Handmaid’s Tale, Killing Eve, The People Vs O.J.Simpson, The Big Bang Theory, and Homeland, most of which have played ahead of all other Irish and UK channels. The department is also responsible for the acquiring of Irish feature films, and international co-productions, and pre-buys including the likes of The Fall, Death and Nightingales, Doing Money, Red Water and Dara and Ed’s Big Adventure.
He co-ordinates RTÉ’s partnerships with outside bodies and represents RTE in its dealings with the Screen Ireland (formerly the Irish Film Board), SPI (Screen Producers Ireland) and Animation Ireland. He is also a member of the EBU TV Committee which commissions the Eurovision Song Contest and has its own co-production and development fund.
Recently he has taken on the role of being responsible for the RTÉ Archive, which is the largest audio and audiovisual library in Ireland and a major project to digitise the entire catalogue has just been agreed. He is former chairman and currently a member of TIF Broadcasting and Content Distribution Industry of IBEC, the Irish employers’ federation. He is a board member of the St. Patrick’s Festival.
