The Network [2024]

Being selected for The Network was possibly the best thing that ever happened to me! It helped me break into the TV industry and secure my first runner job when I was just 18. Having The Network on my CV and being able to talk to people about my experiences at the Edinburgh TV Festival made me stand out as someone who was super passionate about TV and knowledgeable about the industry. Now, not only can I talk massively enthusiastically about TV, but people can also see that I’ve been to Edinburgh, I’ve proved my passion and I’ve done the development workshop with renowned production company MultiStory Media which helps me stand out. The main thing The Network has given me is confidence. Going to all the amazing Networking events as someone who had never really networked before gave me the opportunity to throw myself in at the deep end and learn from the brilliant people around me. It’s given me a confidence I never imagined I’d have and now I love talking to new people and getting to know everyone on my jobs!
My time at the festival was incredible, I still believe it was the best week of my life! I met so many new incredible friends who I am still in touch with now and got to collaborate creatively with so many brilliant people through the workshops, which I massively enjoyed. Talking to people who shared my passion was one of the best parts of the experience – meeting people who share your favourite TV shows and can recommend you new ones too is so fun and it’s so easy to make friends at the festival because everybody around you is equally as passionate about TV and telling stories as you are! The festival opened up so many opportunities for me too: from seeing James Graham’s captivating MacTaggart lecture, to networking in the beautiful National Museum of Scotland, and learning about jobs I didn’t even know existed before! I had the best time and wish I could do it all over again!
I have so many highlights from The Network, including doing the live pitch in front of GK Barry, meeting two of my favourite TV writers, going out with my new friends, listening to James Graham’s Mactaggart lecture, and being in the audience at the Edinburgh TV Awards where some of my favourite TV shows won! On a more personal level, the highlight was realising that these are my people, and that the in the world of TV, I fit right in.
