Nick Havergal

University of Bristol

Nick’s PhD research looks at the representations of masculinity in popular performance between 1880 and 1914, using the South West of England as a core case study. Nick has an interest in non-London pasts and in unusual or previously hidden histories, especially those relating to gender and sexuality.

Nick has been a writer-on-attachment at Bristol Old Vic since 2014. By drawing on Nick’s passion for storytelling, he wants to explore how regional or other rarely-heard voices can be brought to bear on specialist factual platforms. Nick is particularly keen to develop fresh takes on documentary programming that blend historical rigour with experimental formats and captivating narrative, building on the recent trend of ‘box-set histories’, drama-docs and other cross-media approaches in current British television-making.
