Jonny McGuigan

Senior Journalist, BBC News

Jonny has overseen social media planning, commissioning, and delivery, across many of the biggest news events in living memory for BBC News.

Starting his career in local TV at BBC Yorkshire’s Look North, he’s passionate about the importance of regional media and is proud of his work to unite network and regional social coverage.

After catching the journalism bug aged 13 on community radio in his native north east England, he’s never looked back. He spent 3 years in Student TV and Radio at the University of Leeds (and found a bit of time to get a degree too!).

One day, Jonny would love to lead a major news broadcaster or agency; he's particularly interested in helping to navigate the changing media landscape. He wonders, what's next? Could content be delivered by hologram...?

“When Jonny speaks we listen. He has this rare combination of authority, humility and generosity at the same time. His understanding of media habits and audience needs is a excellent brew of data and instinct which inspires his colleagues and managers alike.” Naja Nielsen, Digital Director, BBC News
