Chief Brand Officer, Discovery & Factual, Nancy Daniels, is to make her debut appearance at the Festival as part of the Gamechanger strand, and Head of Originals, YouTube EMEA, Luke Hyams will discuss the opportunities available to indies in a breakout commissioning session, it was announced today (FRI).

Daniels, who has enjoyed an 11-year tenure at Discovery, assumed her new role in March this year, taking on all creative and brand strategy, development, production, marketing and day-to-day operations for Discovery Channel and Science Channel in the U.S.

In the session, Daniels will outline the new opportunities available to producers within Discovery Channel and Science Channel and reveal her broader vision for the brands in the year ahead.

She was previously President of TLC which became a top 10 network for women under her stewardship, with series including 90 Day Fiancé, The Little Couple and Sister Wives.

Daniels takes over at a key moment in Discovery’s history, with her appointment coming on the back of its $14.6bn acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive.

The deal makes Discovery one of the biggest players in global unscripted programming, with CEO David Zaslaz saying the company will dominate the space it calls “real-life entertainment.” Alongside Discovery sit key brands including HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery and Eurosport.

Luke Hyams, Head of Originals, YouTube EMEA

“Our line-up of International Gamechangers continues to grow, giving delegates access to the very best of the industry. Were delighted to be welcoming Nancy to the Festival to talk about her remarkable ambitions and vision. YouTube Originals have been owning the trade headlines lately with their big orders from UK indies and that will guarantee that Luke’s session will be must-see and standing room only.””

Phil Edgar-Jones, Advisory Chair

Hyams, Head of Originals, YouTube EMEA will reveal in his session how the YouTube Originals commissioning process works, outlining commissions so far, and what the platform has coming up.

With a strategy and shopping list which comprises both scripted and unscripted ideas, Hyams will discuss what opportunities are open to the UK indie sector and who else makes up the commissioning team in the UK.

In addition, Hyams will be joined by special guests, show exclusive clips and offer an insight into the platform which has already brought us original shows such as Jack Whitehall’s Training Day (Fulwell 73), The Sidemen Show (Antenna) and The New Karate Kid spin-off bingeable-drama ‘Cobra Kai’.

Hyams was previously at The Walt Disney Company where he oversaw development of original digital franchises for the Disney Digital Network, working alongside the world’s best digital creators, writers and producers.
